Honoring 75 Years of Innovation & Leadership*

For three-quarters of a century, the Farm Equipment Manufacturers Association (FEMA) has been at the forefront of advancing the farm equipment industry. From its humble beginnings to becoming a pillar of innovation and advocacy, our association has remained steadfast in its mission to support manufacturers, suppliers, and industry professionals.

A Legacy of Growth & Impact

Key Milestones in FEMA’s Journey: Shortline farm equipment manufacturers have a long tradition of innovation, creating specialized solutions that help farmers boost efficiency and maximize profitability. While the Farm Equipment Manufacturers Association (FEMA) was founded in 1950, it is important to recognize that shortline equipment manufacturers were in existence well before that time.

Through the decades, other notable shortline innovations include:

1950s

1950 – On October 14, 1950, a meeting is held at the Sheraton hotel where a vote is taken to form the Allied Farm Equipment Manufacturers Association (AFEMA). The first president is Wendell Butler, Galloway Co., and the office is in Chicago, Illinois.

1950s – Arthur “Art” Hellbusch, founder of Duo-Lift, starts to irrigate his farm by using an irrigation pipe. He also designs and manufactures a trailer to transport the pipe to and from the field as well as a way to store the pipe during the winter. This product is still made today.

1950 – The self-propelled windrower is produced by Killbery Industries and marketed under the Grain-Saver brand. This Canadian company is later renamed MacDon.

1964 – Ace Pump Corp, Memphis, Tennessee, develops the first PTO-driven centrifugal pump for applying a newly developed wettable chemical.

1967 – Unverferth Manufacturing introduces the step-up wheel lug that allows farmers to adapt older tractors to the larger 38-inch diameter wheels and tires manufacturers are installing on newer tractor models.

1967 – H&S Manufacturing is founded by Mr. Lauri Heikenen and two partners to manufacture and sell self-unloading forage boxes to farm equipment dealers.

1968 – Bob Schnell starts his career with FEMA.

Testimonial

Jenny Steffensmeir

"Given our 40 plus year history of serving southeast Iowa farmers, and our desire to grow our business, we thought FEMA might be a good fit. In two short years of membership, we have gained not just new business relationships, but friendships with members who go generations deep to newbies like us!"

Jenny Steffensmeier , Steffensmeier Welding & Manufacturing

Anthony Montag

"There might be competitors in the association, but you will find at the conventions that we all share a common goal. Where else can you connect with peers, learn from them, and recognize industry contributions? At a past convention, five individuals were honored for their impact on agriculture and I even had lunch with one of them. Learning from such leaders is invaluable. FEMA’s resources are truly valuable and the benefits far
outweigh the costs."

Anthony Montag, Montag Manufacturing, Inc.

Richelle Andreas

"Attending FEMA conventions has been eye-opening for me. It’s incredible to witness the inclusive space they provide, accommodating companies of all sizes and diverse approaches – from manufacturing to sales to distribution. Despite our varied paths, we share a common objective: to ensure the satisfaction of end users and to enhance farming practices, making them safer and more efficient. It’s inspiring to see how we all come together with this shared goal in mind."
